Bag of HopeThe Bag of Hope program is a free outreach program designed to provide information and support to families with children who have been newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. A Bag of Hope is a kit filled with relevant diabetes education materials, some intended to communicate directly with the child and some geared toward the adult caregiver(s), including (but not limited to): Rufus, the Bear with Diabetes, Rufus Comes Home book, A First Book for Understanding Diabetes, other reference books, a DVD, and an Accu-Chek® Aviva Compact Blood Meter. A dedicated volunteer delivers the Bag of Hope to newly diagnosed children and their families.
Networking CoffeesNetworking Coffees are support group meetings that take place at the homes of JDRF volunteers. These meetings are a way for parents and other caregivers to interact, share diabetes management tips, and learn about JDRF. Featured speakers include healthcare professionals and other experts in the diabetes field. A variety of topics are covered, such as travel, school issues, pump therapy, nutrition, and how to choose a babysitter. In addition, JDRF holds regular Specialty Networking Coffee programs that take place at larger venues as well as Kids Meeting Kids events where children can get together. JDRF encourages all families to attend, as the Networking Coffees are not limited to the newly diagnosed. Parents who have been “been there and done that” also have the opportunity to learn, share ideas, and provide much-needed support to families with a recent diagnosis.
