Donation Crew MembersMonday, April 05, 2010 - Friday, December 31, 2010Help fulfill a vital need at the Furniture Bank by serving as a Donations Crew Member. Like many non-profits the Furniture Bank has had to downsize the number of paid members on our donation crew, thus we need to fill this position with volunteers in order to maintain the use of two donation trucks despite having to lose two staff. A donation crew member will assist with collecting donations for the Furniture Bank. Court-ordered community service accepted.

Furniture DriveMonday, April 05, 2010 - Friday, December 31, 2010Why host a Furniture Drive? Furniture Drives are one of the primary ways the Furniture Bank collects enough furniture to adequately serve its clients. Over the last year, donations have declined while the need for the Furniture Bank's services has increased. Furniture Drives are a great way to recycle and to enlist your work community, congregation or neighborhood in serving others. With a few volunteers and following these easy steps you can make a big difference in others' lives. Hosting a drive is easy. Step 1. Call the Furniture Bank to schedule a weekend to host your drive. The Furniture Bank will bring one of our donation trucks to you on any Friday afternoon and pick the truck up on Monday morning. You pick the date and times you want to collect donations. Step 2. The Furniture Bank will provide promotional materials. Help us by providing the Furniture Bank with information about local businesses, schools, churches in your area, newsletters, newspapers and other public arenas where we can advertise the drive. Invite a Furniture Bank representative to attend a neighborhood meeting with you to share about the Furniture Drive and how we serve the Atlanta community. Step 3. Optional. * Visit the Furniture Bank prior to the drive to see how we serve the homeless, individuals living with HIV/AIDS or fleeing domestic violence situations. Participate or observe how we distribute and receive furniture. * Gather volunteers 3-4 weeks prior to the Furniture Drive to distribute flyers and promotional materials in your area. Step 4. Host the Drive. The day of the Furniture Drive have volunteers on site to share more about the mission of the Furniture Bank, what items we do need, and provide tax deductible receipts to donors. The Furniture Bank will supply additional volunteers based on need. This volunteer opportunity is available to schedule any weekend.

Kitchen Kit DriveMonday, April 05, 2010 - Friday, December 31, 2010THE KITCHEN KIT PROGRAM The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta is seeking a partnership with local groups, congregations, and schools to provide much-needed basic household items to formerly homeless families. Many Furniture Bank clients are transitioning from homeless shelters into apartments and homes. These families are often unable to afford essential household items such as plates, glasses, and pots & pans. This lack of household items prevents families from cooking healthy and cost effective meals and forces families to rely on fast food and eating out. The Kitchen Kit Program contributes to the self-sufficiency of Furniture Bank clients by reducing their food costs, freeing additional income for housing, transportation, and medical needs. HOW TO PARTICIPATE (Lists for particular family sizes below) 1. Your group collects the following items (to serve 2-8 people): • Dishware • Silverware • Glassware • Pots & pans • Various other items if available such as small appliances (toaster, can opener, etc) • Any personal touches to the kits would be appreciated 2. Package the items and schedule a date to drop off the items and tour the Furniture Bank warehouse at 538 Permalume Place, Atlanta, 30318.

Warehouse AssistanceMonday, April 05, 2010 - Friday, December 31, 2010Being a Warehouse Assist helps the Furniture Bank proceed with all regular operations. Donations arrive daily and without volunteer groups working as Warehouse Assistants, we would not have adequate room for all the furniture. Volunteers sort, clean and organize the warehouse. One goal of the activity is to have the warehouse appear as much like a store as possible. This ensures that clients enjoy a dignified experience at the Furniture Bank. We will also load any unusable furniture items onto one of our trucks so we can discard the items. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to assist our clients with selecting and loading furniture. No particular skills are required. Volunteers need to be able to lift and move furniture throughout the warehouse. We do provide dollies to assist with the movement.

Atlanta's Unsung Hero'sGood news seems in short supply these days. Every hour brings new headlines about murder, kidnapping or untimely deaths. Georgia’s unemployment rate sits at a record high. Local no-kill shelters are facing a critical shortage of space. And “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” is set to return for a third season. But we know there are stories of hope and inspiration out there, waiting to be told, so we asked for your help in spotlighting regular Atlantans who are making a difference in the lives and others. Once again, you responded with heartwarming tales of selflessness and inspiration, and we’re extremely proud to present the five deserving souls who make up our second annual Unsung Hero Awards. Enjoy, and drop us a line to tell us about other heroes you admire.—Kevin Forest Moreau check out the rest at the SundayPaper.com.
